About Byline

The brief on the desk had to be right before the day started. That was the standard in agency work, in-house communications, international advisory, and institutions where a wrong line at nine was a problem for someone senior by ten.

Byline runs a desk for one program at a time. You set what matters and what does not, in writing, and the desk is held to it. Most of what it reads never reaches you. That is the work.

What arrives is short, and a named person is accountable for every line in it. On a morning when nothing clears the bar, it says so. That is the harder thing to send, and it is the point. Based in Washington, DC.
